(KAMPONG CHINA) CHINA TOWN

(KAMPONG CHINA) CHINA TOWN

Built by the Chinese immigrants from southern part of the mainland China, it was once a hub for commercial activities. The local Chinese blends so well into the lives of the local Malays that they speak the local dialects fluently and share the likings of traditional delicacies while retaining their unique Chinese identity. Souvenir shops, restaurants, electronic shops and grocery shops lined the colorful buildings. It is also home to two grand temple or toapekongs, the Ho Ann Kiong and Tien Hou Kong. The pre-war buildings are listed under the UNESCO’S World Monument Watch programme. The United Nations realized the importance of conserving the endangered historic sites and historical buildings and Kampung China is in the United Nations’ list. American Express is funding USD50,000.00 per year as part of the UNESCO’S restoration and conservation programme.
